Translation of Essence of Etiquette
What is etiquette? Why is it so important? In simple words, etiquette is good behaviour which makes a human being different from animals. Etiquette or appropriate behaviour is really important because human being is a social animal. A man has good etiquette if he behaves in a socially responsible way.
The idea of etiquette finds its origins among the nobles in early modern France. In fact, the word etiquette itself is derived from the French word for ticket or label, which means these rules were printed and used as labels for good manners.
One of the most notable contributions to the literature of etiquette is Emily Post’s book Etiquette in Society, in Business, in Politics and at Home published in 1922. Through this book, she achieved fame as the pioneer of modern etiquette.
Etiquette is important as it enables a person to earn respect and appreciation in society. It teaches one the way to talk, walk, and most importantly, behave in polite company. The way one interacts with one’s superiors, subordinates, fellow workers, friends, teachers, and parents speaks a lot about one’s personality and upbringing. No one feels like talking to a person who doesn’t know how to speak or behave in a society.
Some of the important types of etiquette are—social etiquette, meeting etiquette, eating etiquette, wedding etiquette, bathroom etiquette, business etiquette, telephone etiquette etc.
Social etiquette is especially important as being in a society is an everyday affair for a human being. Some basic rules of social etiquette have been followed for a very long time. These are considered essential even today.
To say “thank you” costs you nothing. It is good manners to thank people, who have come to your aid. Using words of appreciation and offering compliments and praise whenever required are also considered basic etiquette. However, one needs to be genuine in one’s appreciation. Self-control is also one of the basic rules of etiquette. Self-control is the ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviour effectively in different situations. Keep a check on your behaviour, voice, and emotions if you are in a society. Do not be too loud. Do not boast about the things you possess or you have accomplished.
You may love to talk but do not be the only person talking all the time in a group. Instead, let others speak and listen actively. The art of genuine listening is a precious virtue. Active listening builds relationships, career, respect, and trust. Words are considered a strong tool in building and destroying relationships. Speak with kindness and due caution. Choose your words carefully and keep your body language open.
The habit of being on time is one of the most desired traits in a human being. Arriving too early is not good etiquette, nor is arriving late. Good etiquette tells us to be punctual at any cost.
It is absolutely important to maintain eye contact during a conversation. It establishes a level of trust and understanding. It is also a sign of self-confidence and assurance. A person who is looking at numerous other things during a conversation is viewed as unsure, untrustworthy, and shifty.
When it comes to school etiquette, it plays a pivotal role in the character-building process of a young student. As a future adult and a responsible future citizen, a student must follow school etiquette which will eventually help him in his future endeavours. There are some basic rules and manners that should be taught to students at school. Good marks and academic excellence will surely help a student to become successful but knowing how to conduct oneself, and understanding what is right and wrong are essential to survive in this competitive world. These are some important rules of school and classroom etiquette—be punctual, obey the school rules, be respectful to the teachers and staff, pay attention while the teacher is talking, don’t litter the classroom and school grounds, don’t mess the toilets, don’t graffiti, or vandalize school property, respect everyone’s rights and practise being well-mannered.
People who follow proper etiquette stand out in a crowd. A kind, soft-spoken, well-mannered person is the jewel of a polite society who inspires joy and positivity wherever he goes.
Summary – Essence of Etiquette
Etiquette means good behaviour. It is how we act and talk in front of other people. When we behave nicely, people respect us and like us. That is why etiquette is very important in life.
Long ago in France, rich people made rules about good manners. The word “etiquette” came from a French word that means “ticket” or “label”. These rules were like labels to show good behaviour.
In 1922, a woman named Emily Post wrote a book about etiquette. She taught people how to behave in home, office, public places and became very famous.
Etiquette teaches us how to talk nicely, walk properly, and behave well with others. It shows how we treat our teachers, friends, family members, and workers. It also shows what kind of upbringing we have.
There are many types of etiquette:
• Social etiquette – How to behave with people in society.
• Meeting etiquette – How to behave in meetings.
• Eating etiquette – How to eat properly with others.
• Wedding, bathroom, business, and telephone etiquette are also important.
Among all, social etiquette is very important because we live in society every day.
If someone helps you, you should say “thank you”. It is good manners. Saying nice things and praising others is also part of etiquette. But it should be honest. Do not say fake things.
Self-control is also a rule of etiquette. You should not get angry or talk loudly in public. Do not show off or boast about your things.
If you like to talk, that is good. But let others speak too. Do not talk all the time. Listen to others carefully. This is called active listening, and it builds trust and respect.
Words are powerful. They can make or break relationships. So speak with kind words. Choose your words carefully. Your body language should also be friendly.
Another good habit is being on time. Do not be too early or too late. Be punctual always.
When you are talking to someone, look at their eyes. This is called eye contact. It shows confidence and honesty. If your eyes move here and there, people think you are not serious or not truthful.
In school, etiquette is very important. It helps students become good people and responsible citizens. Only marks are not enough — behaviour also matters. Some important school manners are:
• Come to school on time.
• Follow school rules.
• Respect teachers and staff.
• Listen carefully in class.
• Keep classroom and school clean.
• Use toilets properly.
• Do not write on walls or break things.
• Be polite to everyone.
People who follow good etiquette are loved and respected. A kind, soft-spoken person spreads happiness and good feelings everywhere.
