Summary of The Fun They Had
The story is set in the future, in the year 2157, where children do not go to schools like today. Instead, they study at home with mechanical teachers (robots). These teachers are computers that teach lessons, give homework, and take tests.
One day, Tommy, a 13-year-old boy, finds an old real book in his attic. The book is about schools from the past, where children studied together in classrooms with human teachers. Margie, an 11-year-old girl, is very curious about the book. She finds it strange that the words do not move like they do on a screen.
Margie does not like her robotic teacher because it gives her too many tests. She feels sad that children in the past had fun learning together in real schools. She realizes that studying alone with a machine is boring. As she thinks about it, she wishes she could experience school the way children did in the past—learning with friends, laughing, and playing together.
In the end, Margie understands that old schools were much more fun than her current way of learning.
